Emoji

Originated in Japan, the word Emoji comes from the Japanese “e” meaning picture and “moji” meaning character and popularised on Japanese mobile phones in the late 1990’s. Once adopted by Apple and Google in 2011 they have become a global phenomenon. They are now often referenced in phone OS updates.
